PORR CEO Karl-Heinz Strauss said: “The new 12.6 km section of the Prague Ring Road is one of the largest road construction projects currently underway in the Czech Republic. The ring road as a whole is of enormous importance for the region’s economy. We are pleased to be able to contribute our extensive expertise in international motorway construction here”.
Once completed, the Prague Ring Road will significantly improve traffic flow through the city as a six-lane motorway. The 83-kilometre route will not only connect a total of nine motorways that lead from the capital to neighbouring regions and countries but also help to better channel the considerable transit traffic and suburban traffic.
19 bridges and two tunnels
The consortium will build the section between Běchovice and the D1 motorway over a period of four years. This will help relieve traffic in the east of Prague in particular. According to forecasts, between 70,000 and 80,000 vehicles will use this route every day by 2030, vehicles that would otherwise be blocking the city’s main traffic arteries.
In addition to two cut-and-cover tunnels, 19 bridges with a total length of almost 2 km are planned. This will require extraordinary logistical effort given the urban location: The excavated soil alone will total around 4 million cubic metres. Since part of the route runs close to residential areas, alternative routes are being chosen for the delivery and removal of materials in order to minimise the impact on people. Extensive noise protection measures have also been planned for this purpose, including dams, green belts and 4 km of noise barriers.
