PORR has been awarded another public contract using the Design & Build method

Prague, 30 01.2023 - PORR won the public tender for the construction of the building of the Intensive Medicine Simulation Centre at the Motol University Hospital in Prague. The contract was awarded using the Design & Build methodology. Work will commence in spring 2023, with completion scheduled for the end of 2025.

The project "Intensive Medicine Simulation Centre" is being implemented within the framework of the National Renovation Plan and is the fourth public contract awarded using the Design & Build method that PORR a.s. is implementing in the Czech Republic.  The Design & Build method is characterised by the fact that the responsibility for the preparation of the project documentation is fully or partially transferred to the contractor. The client defines only the purpose, standards and performance criteria in the assignment, i.e. the characteristics that the building should meet in terms of energy consumption, quality of the internal environment and range of functions. The project developer is then responsible for compliance with these requirements and bears the potential risks and a significantly higher level of responsibility. Therefore, higher demands are placed on the skills and quality of the contractor than when the contract is awarded in the standard form. At the same time, the use of the Design & Build method allows for a faster start of implementation with the possibility of overlapping the design and implementation phases, and therefore faster commissioning of the construction. At the same time, this method of award ensures that the tender price is maintained and is not subsequently affected by changes in the design documentation made by the contractor during the execution of the work.

„PORR has extensive experience in the implementation of projects commissioned using the Design & Build method worldwide, including in the field of construction for the healthcare sector. Most recently, our Polish colleagues won a tender for the construction of a new cancer centre in Wrocław worth 200 million euros,“ said Dušan Čížek, Member of the Board, PORR a.s.

The construction of the Simulation Centre is designed using the BIM (Building Information Modeling) methodology. Designing with this methodology brings with it immeasurable advantages in minimizing the risks of "collisions" of structures and HVAC at high levels. It also means easier project management and logistics on site, thus reducing construction costs. The information model is then used throughout the life of the building for building management.

Main facilities of the new centre

The new five-storey building of the Simulation Centre for Intensive Care Medicine at Motol University Hospital will house two facilities. The main one will be a very specific operation of the Simulation Centre, which combines the operating principles of medical and educational buildings. On the upper floors, the Institute of Microbiology of the 2nd Faculty of Medicine of Charles University and Motol University Hospital is proposed to operate, which, in addition to laboratories, provides teaching of the subject of medical microbiology for the 2nd Faculty of Medicine of Charles University and Motol University Hospital.

The training facilities within the Simulation Centre include a simulated operation of the emergency room and the associated specialised ICU and ARO departments. It is also possible to accommodate a simulated CT scanning room. The emergency room is directly connected to the adjacent training yard. In this yard, field intervention training will take place and a mock ambulance will be parked. Thanks to this, it is possible to simulate the entire course of intervention of paramedics with a link to the emergency department.

The simulation centre also includes operating theatres including the necessary facilities for pre-operative preparation (anaesthesia, washing). The theatres will be equipped similarly to the real ones. One operating theatre will be equipped with an angio line. In the multifunctional operating theatre it is planned to simulate different environments and situations according to the user's needs.

In the multi-purpose training rooms the preparation and evaluation of training simulations will take place.

Institute of Microbiology

In 3. and 4. NP of the building will house the Department of Microbiology of the 2nd Faculty of Medicine of Charles University and Motol University Hospital. The Institute will include rooms for sample reception and for automated and manual processing of material and its incubation in thermostats.

Individual laboratories will be equipped according to the specific requirements of specialized medical professions.

The total value of the contract is 461 million CZK. Construction of the centre will begin in spring 2023 and completion is planned for the end of 2025.
